The Dog’s Paw

Dogs are digitigrades, which means they walk on their toes. Their paws can be compared to our hands. They have four toes separated by skin folds, as well as claws. A fifth toe is located slightly higher on the front legs. It is absent on the hind paws, although some dogs have an additional dewclaw, also known as a wolf claw, on both their front and hind legs. It is located on the inside of the paw.

The undersides of their paws have robust pads (toe pads and metacarpal pads). Slightly higher up, they also have a carpal pad. In general, the pads protect against minor wounds. Under normal circumstances, dogs very rarely injure their paws.

When Does Your Dog Need a Dog Shoe?

Dog paws contain many receptors. Within a millisecond, they tell the dog’s brain where the dog is walking or standing. They ensure, for example, that the animal does not step on hot asphalt or broken glass. Your dog therefore does not need additional protection during normal activity.

However, if your dog has sustained a paw injury and is wearing a bandage, a special dog shoe protects both the bandage and the paw itself. Your loyal friend can move around without accidentally opening the bandage, while the shoe also cushions pressure on the injured paw.

Other useful situations can arise during certain seasons. No dog wants to walk on asphalt or stone in scorching heat. Both surfaces heat up so much in the sun that walking on them can burn the paw pads. Shoes protect your dog’s paws from the heat. Tip: You can easily test whether the ground is too hot for your dog in summer—simply walk barefoot for a few steps. If it feels uncomfortably hot to you, it will probably feel that way to your dog too.

Good paw protection also makes walks easier in freezing temperatures, snow, or road salt during winter. It prevents your dog’s paws from becoming cracked or freezing in the cold. It can also help prevent troublesome snowballs from forming in the fur between the paws, which is especially important for dogs with long coats.

What to Look for When Choosing the Right Dog Shoe

Not every dog shoe fits every dog—because every paw is different. To ensure that your companion feels comfortable and is well protected, you should pay attention to a few important points when buying:

• The right shoe size: The shoe must neither pinch nor slip. Measure your dog’s paw while they are standing and bearing weight on it. This ensures that the shoe will fit properly later.
• Good fit: An anatomically shaped dog shoe supports the paw’s natural movement and prevents pressure points or chafing, even during longer walks.
• Durable, non-slip sole: This is particularly important on smooth surfaces or uneven terrain. It provides safety and protects against sharp objects or hot asphalt.
• Choice of material: Breathable, water-repellent materials keep the paws dry and at a comfortable temperature—in summer and winter alike.
• Easy to put on and take off: A sturdy, adjustable hook-and-loop fastener ensures that the shoe stays securely in place while still being easy to put on.
• Consider the intended use: Whether for protection against injuries, to prevent claw wear caused by hip dysplasia or spondylosis, or to relieve problems caused by grass mites, a different type of shoe may be appropriate depending on the situation.

SKO Bandage Protection Shoe—for Protecting Injured and Bandaged Paws

This protective shoe has all the features of the regular TOFFLER dog shoe, but is designed to be extra roomy. This means that even a thick bandage applied by the veterinarian will fit inside the shoe.

If your dog has injured a paw and needs to wear a bandage, the bandage protection shoe reliably protects both the paw and the bandage, allowing you to take your beloved companion for a walk. Naturally, you should walk a little more slowly than usual so as not to interfere with the paw’s healing process.

If it is very wet outside or you know that there is a wet meadow along your route, we recommend pulling a standard freezer bag over the bandage before putting the shoe on your loyal friend.

You receive 1 shoe in a reusable storage box. You can select the bandage protection shoe individually for the front or hind paws. If there is loose dirt on the protective shoe after the walk, simply let it dry. You can then brush the dirt off easily.

TOFFLER Fleece Indoor Dog Shoes—for Greater Safety at Home

The fleece TOFFLER shoes are ideal for use indoors. The soft fleece material makes the shoes completely breathable. The non-slip outsole provides secure grip, allowing dogs to walk comfortably on smooth floors. For senior dogs and dogs with disabilities, it is often sufficient to wear the indoor shoes on the hind paws to prevent slipping on smooth floors.
