That's why heat protection is so important for dogs

Dogs sweat differently than humans. Our body regulates body temperature through the skin. Therefore, we have quite a large area for evaporation. But dogs have much fewer sweat glands and therefore make do with panting.

In addition, dogs evaporate their nasal gland secretions to protect them from overheating. Here dogs have a larger surface than we humans. Over a certain period of time, the regulation of body temperature works well. But at values of 35 °C and more, a dog's body reaches its natural limit.

Useful tips for summer heat

We have collected possible sources of danger for dogs in the summer. If you think about them and act accordingly, your dog will survive the heat more easily.

Food and water

When it's very hot, dogs have a harder time digesting food. Therefore, small portions are more comfortable for your pet during this time. In addition, the water bowl should always be filled so that it can drink at any time.

If you are traveling with your faithful friend, have a bottle of water with you and a water bowl for the road. Simply offer the water to him at regular intervals.

Coat care and skin

Your dog has a sensitive skin or is very fair? Then it helps to protect the tip of the nose and the ears with a baby sunscreen, for example. Regular brushing can also help.

Be careful, however, when shearing long-haired dogs with dense undercoat. Here the top coat thins out, while the undercoat usually becomes even denser - and therefore more attractive to parasites. In addition, fur that is shorn too short can lead to communication problems with other dogs.

It's best to consult a dog groomer to determine whether shortening your pet's coat makes sense. Because with some races the fur is also sun and heat protection.

Car as a heat trap

If you drive with your dog in the summer, turn on the air conditioning. Your dog will be as grateful as your own body. If you use a carrier, make sure your dog gets enough air.

Never leave a living creature in the car in the heat! Not even "very briefly".

Cars heat up very quickly when exposed to sunlight, even with a stationary climate. And there also panting does not help the dog any more. Here it can come fast to a heat stroke and irreparable organ damage.

Hot underground

Another danger in summer are asphalt, stone and sand. In direct sunlight, they quickly heat up to over 60°C at an outside temperature of about 30°C and your dog will burn his paws.

The 5-second test can help here: Put the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If it does not hurt, your dog can walk on it.

Field paths and meadows are much more pleasant for dogs in hot weather. If you still have to walk on hot asphalt, a paw protector can help.

Sports and walks

The sun naturally tempts you to go outside. But refrain from strenuous sports activities during the day. In the cooler morning and evening hours you can go for a walk or run with your dog.

Keep an eye out for a bathing opportunity. I'm sure your dog will be happy to take a cooling dip.

Dogs with short muzzles

If your dog has a shortened nose due to breeding - like the pug - pay special attention to him. Because here the regulation of body temperature via the nose is limited.

Signs of overheating

  • extremely heavy panting
  • Staggering and/or apathy
  • glazed look
  • dark tongue
  • Vomiting

First aid measures

  1. Move your dog to the shade.
  2. Cool the body with lukewarm water (for example, with towels).
  3. Offer him lukewarm drinking water.
  4. Call a veterinarian or visit a doctor's office.
