Frequently asked questions about proper dog care

Regular grooming improves your dog's quality of life and can extend its lifespan. It strengthens the bond between you and your four-legged friend and enables you to recognize changes such as redness, eczema or parasites at an early stage and act accordingly.

Grooming should cover your dog's entire body, from the muzzle to the paws. Important aspects are.

  • Regular removal of dirt to prevent inflammation.
  • Gentle cleaning of ears and eyes to prevent infections.
  • Getting used to brushing teeth at an early age for healthy teeth. ATTENTION: Chewable snacks are not a substitute for dental hygiene.
  • Regularly check and trim the claws and check for cracks or injuries to the paws, especially after walks.

The frequency of claw trimming varies depending on your dog's activity level and the surface on which it moves. In general, claws should be trimmed so that they do not touch the ground when standing. Regular checks help to prevent overgrowth.

Please be careful not to cut the claws too far, as you could injure your dog!

This depends on the type of coat. Short-haired dogs need a bath less often, while long-haired dogs should be washed more regularly. As a general rule, bathing should only be done when necessary so as not to damage the natural protective layer of your dog's skin. Use lukewarm water and a mild dog shampoo. Make sure that no water gets into the ears and dry your dog thoroughly after the bath.

At SABRO we offer a wide range of high-quality grooming products for your dog, including.

  • Eye and ear pads: For gentle and easy cleaning and prevention of inflammation.
  • Tick card: For the safe removal of ticks after walks.
  • Absorbent dog towels: They allow your dog to dry efficiently and quickly. This is particularly important to protect your dog from getting cold and minimize the risk of skin irritation.

How to care for your dog and keep him healthy

Proper dog grooming and hygiene are essential for your dog's well-being and health. Depending on the dog breed and coat type, your dog needs individualized care. Grooming should be an integral part of everyday life, especially for long-haired dogs. However, not only the coat, but also teeth, ears and paws deserve regular attention.

Why grooming your dog is important

Dogs have long been loyal companions for us humans. And they are dependent on the care of their owners. After all, bad teeth, dull coats and excessive earwax are not "natural" for animals either.

With regular grooming, your dog's quality of life will improve and he will be by your side for longer. If your pet feels really comfortable in its coat, it will show you its affection with shining eyes and wagging tail.

Dog grooming is also an important bonding ritual. You strengthen your relationship with your dog, give him security and he learns to trust you. You will also be able to recognize changes such as redness, eczema, injuries, dull and shiny fur or parasites more quickly and do something about them.

This is part of dog care

Good hygiene starts with proper grooming - from muzzle to paws. This doesn't just include cleaning the coat after an adventurous walk when your dog is covered in dirt. The following items are part of a comprehensive dog grooming routine:

  • Fur brush
  • Eye care
  • Dental care and cleaning
  • Cleaning the ears
  • Claw and paw care

Breed-specific requirements: What you need to look out for in your dog

Grooming differs depending on the dog breed. Long-haired dogs need more grooming than short-haired dogs. Other breeds, on the other hand, tend to have problems with their teeth or ears.

  • Coat care:
    • Long-haired dogs (e.g. Collies, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs) tend to become matted and need to be brushed regularly - often daily.
    • Short-haired dogs (e.g. Dalmatians, Boxers, Labradors) often shed more, but require less intensive brushing.
    • Curly or wiry coats (e.g. poodles, schnauzers, terriers) require special trimming or clipping to avoid tangles in the coat.
    • Double-coated dogs (e.g. Husky, Akita, German Shepherd) go through a seasonal coat change, during which more intensive coat care is required.
  • Dental care:
    • Small breeds (e.g. Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Miniature Spitz) are more susceptible to tartar and tooth loss, which is why regular tooth brushing is often particularly important for these dog breeds.
  • Ear care:
    • Dogs with floppy ears (e.g. Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds) have a higher risk of ear infections as less air circulates. Regular checks and cleaning of the ears are necessary!
    • Dogs with erect ears (e.g. German shepherds, huskies) generally have fewer problems, but their sensitive ears should still be regularly checked for dirt and cleaned.
  • Paw and claw care:
    • Very active dogs (e.g. Border Collie, Australian Shepherd) often wear out their claws more naturally, but still need regular checks.
    • Dogs with light-colored or sensitive paws (e.g. greyhounds) can get cracks or injuries more quickly and may need additional protection with paw balm or protective shoes.

Tips and tricks for a simple care routine

As you already know, regular grooming of your dog's coat, eyes, ears and teeth is important to prevent health problems and promote the well-being of your four-legged friend. Here are simple tips on how to effectively clean your dog's sensitive areas:

Cleaning the eyes

  • Gentle cleaning: Use a soft cloth or cotton pads to gently wipe your dog's eyes. If dirt or tear deposits have accumulated, use a special eye cleaning wipe or a mild eye solution from the veterinary pharmacy.
  • Regular check-ups: Look out for signs of redness, swelling or excessive tearing. These may indicate an infection or allergy. If there are any problems, you should consult a vet.
  • Take special care with certain breeds: Dogs with flat faces (such as pugs or bulldogs) are prone to increased tearing. Regular cleaning can help to avoid skin irritation.

Cleaning the ears

  • Gentle cleaning: Use special ear cleaning drops to loosen dirt and excess earwax. Carefully drip the solution into the dog's ear, massage the ear for a few seconds and then wipe off the residue with a soft cloth or cotton pad. Alternatively, you can also use ready-made ear cleaner pads.
  • Look out for symptoms: Look out for an unpleasant odor or signs of redness and inflammation in the ear - these could be signs of an ear infection or ear mites. In such cases, we recommend that you consult a vet as soon as possible.
  • Dogs with floppy ears: For breeds with floppy ears, such as Cocker Spaniels or Basset Hounds, you should check and clean the ears even more regularly, as dirt can accumulate more easily here compared to erect ears and the risk of infection increases.

Care of the teeth

  • Brush your teeth: The most effective method of dental care is regular brushing. Use a special dog toothpaste and a soft toothbrush. Brush your dog's teeth at least 2-3 times a week, preferably daily, to prevent tartar and gingivitis.
  • Dental care chews: If your dog doesn't like having his teeth brushed, you can also use dental care chews or toys to help break down plaque. These are particularly helpful in keeping the gums healthy. Please note: Chew toys are no substitute for proper dental care!
  • Check-ups at the vet: Regular veterinary dental care is also important. An annual dental check-up at the vet helps to detect and treat problems at an early stage.

Coat care

  • Regular brushing: Long-haired dogs in particular need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting and remove excess fur. Use a suitable brush depending on the coat type.
  • Care after a walk: After walks in the countryside, you should check the coat for foreign objects such as thorns, dust or dirt and clean it.
  • Bathing when needed: You should only bathe your dog when it is really necessary - frequent bathing can dry out the skin. Use a mild dog shampoo that is especially suitable for your dog's skin needs.
  • Condition and shine: To keep the coat shiny and healthy, you can also integrate omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. from fish oil) into the diet. This supports skin health and improves the appearance of the coat.

Additional tips

  • Patience and routine: Start grooming early and get your dog used to the procedures so that he relaxes and accepts grooming or cleaning as part of the routine.
  • Choose the right products: Make sure to use products that are specifically designed for dogs, such as mild eye and ear cleaners or dog toothpaste that don't contain harmful ingredients to protect your dog.
