Frequently asked questions about dog collars & harnesses

It is best to measure the neck circumference close to the skin - especially for long-haired dogs, so that the coat is not measured as well. For dogs with loose skin (e.g. Labradors), please also measure the skin folds. For harnesses, measure the chest circumference directly behind the front legs.

No tape measure to hand? No problem! Just take a piece of string, tie it tightly around your neck or chest, tie a knot and then measure it with a folding rule.

Our sizes are selected so that your dog feels comfortable and the collar or harness is not too tight. If your dog is between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one - for a relaxed fit.

Yes, our collars are made of soft and skin-friendly materials that are also ideal for sensitive dogs. They do not cause any friction or irritation, are particularly comfortable - and are suitable for allergy sufferers as they do not contain nickel.

No, our collars and harnesses are not suitable for the washing machine as they may otherwise be damaged.

This is how you can clean them:

  • Leather collars: These must not be washed wet. It is better to care for the leather with special leather cleaners and our Tapir leather grease, which you apply thinly and then polish.
  • Rope collars with leather fittings: You can wash these carefully by hand with mild or wool detergent. You should then treat the leather areas with leather care.
  • Brass fittings: You can remove a light patina with apple cider vinegar or a silver cleaning cloth.
  • Harnesses: Please wash them by hand in warm water with mild mild or wool detergent, without fabric softener, and allow them to air dry.

The exact care instructions and details can also be found with the respective product under "Care/use".

Our SABRO collars are available in different sizes - from small to large - so that there is a suitable collar for many dogs. They are ideal for everyday use. However, for particularly strong, heavy or strong-pulling dogs, we recommend using a dog collar that is specially adapted to your needs and is particularly robust and stable.

Puppies usually need softer and adjustable collars that grow with them and are gentle on their sensitive necks. We do not offer special puppy collars. Our collars are adjustable and available in different sizes so that they can also be suitable for young dogs - provided that the collar fits comfortably and snugly without pinching. Please make sure that it is not too heavy or too tight for the sensitive puppy neck and check the fit regularly.

The basic equipment for your four-legged friend

Dog lead, collar, dog bowl & dog bed: these are the absolute basics for your dog. Like the other items, you will need the dog collar and lead several times a day. Because they are the connection to your four-legged friend when you go for a walk. To make your faithful four-legged friend feel comfortable, you need the right collar or dog harness.

Collars & harnesses - comfort meets safety

Collar or dog harness - what suits you best

Whether you choose a harness or a collar depends on several factors.

If your dog is already easy to lead and walks on a loose lead, then a collar is the right choice. A collar offers your furry friend great freedom of movement, as there are no straps on the body to restrict shoulder blade action or chafe in the dog's armpit, for example, as can be the case with a poorly fitted harness. When buying a collar, you should make sure that it fits well, is comfortable to wear and suits your dog's type and needs.

Important: If you want to work with the drag line, be sure to use a dog harness, as the sensitive cervical spine can be severely damaged if he runs off and is stopped by the collar. It is also essential to use a well-fitting harness when leading your dog on a bicycle.

There are different types of collars, such as classic buckle collars, pull-stop collars or slip collars, each offering different functions and advantages.

For some, a collar is unsuitable. This applies to all four-legged friends with short noses: for example, English and French Bulldogs, German Boxers and Pugs. Their breathing is often impaired. If a collar restricts the animal, it can react with an epileptic seizure.

The following also applies to all dogs: The outdated training method of jerking on the lead (also known as "signaling" or "influencing") is a health hazard. The cervical vertebrae are exposed to a high level of stress during a sudden jerk. The dog's windpipe can be crushed and the larynx injured. This is also the case if your dog pulls continuously.

Pull-stop or training collars are pulled over the head and tighten to a certain point when the lead is pulled. The slip collar is a special type of collar that can be easily pulled over the dog's head and adjusts when the neck is pulled.

We at SABRO believe that it is best for dog owners to have both a suitable collar and a harness with a good fit at home - so they can choose the right one for every occasion.

What materials are SABRO dog collars and harnesses made of?

A dog collar should always be sturdy, light and supple. We therefore use the following materials:

  • Scandinavian elk and cowhide leather
  • High-quality and sturdy outdoor rope
  • Soft material

Genuine leather is a natural material that looks simple and elegant at the same time. We only use high-quality cowhide and elk leather from Scandinavia for our collars. There, species-appropriate animal husbandry with daily grazing is prescribed by law - so by choosing a leather product from SABRO, you are supporting a particularly animal-friendly form of husbandry. Only elk leather of commercial class 1 is used for the soft underpadding. Thanks to the careful processing, the leather is particularly comfortable to wear and extremely durable. With regular care, e.g. our Tapir leather grease, it will last you for many years.

The outdoor rope is hand and fur-friendly and "made in Germany". It impresses with its high stability and does not absorb moisture.

The soft material used for the harnesses consists of highly tear-resistant cordura tape and thick fleece padding. The soft inside provides extra comfort and protects your dog's sensitive neck area. These collars are not only gentle on the coat, but also have a beautiful pattern.

Our dog collars and harnesses are available in different sizes for small to large dogs. You can choose from a variety of colors to find the right option for your dog.

Find the perfect dog collar

Before you choose a collar, you need to know the circumference of your dog's neck. Measure close-fitting and in the middle of the neck - this is particularly important for long-haired dogs. If you don't have a tape measure to hand, you can measure with a piece of string and tie a knot in the end you have measured. You can then use a folding rule to determine the length.

To find the right collar from our range, you can use filters on our website to narrow down the products by price, material or color. This will help you quickly find the right product for your dog. On the respective product page, you will find further information, pictures and selection options for our products. Our range includes a large selection of dog collars in different collections, so you can choose from an extensive range of high-quality products.

You don't need to worry about the measurements being too tight. We have already measured our collars to fit, so even with a pull stop there is still room for 1 finger of air. All our collars come with the sizes, you simply look at the measured centimetres.

Please note: Every dog is individually built. Coat texture, neck shape and build can influence the fit. We therefore recommend trying on the collar at your leisure after purchase and checking the fit.

Pull-stop collar - For special requirements

A pull-stop collar is the ideal choice for dogs that like to pull on the lead during walks or where extra safety is required. In contrast to conventional collars, the pull-stop collar ensures that the pull is limited to the neck and the dog collar does not tighten uncontrollably. This prevents the dog from choking itself by pulling too hard or the collar being too tight on the neck. A pull-stop collar offers additional safety and control, especially for dog breeds that are known for their strong pulling or for dogs that are still in training.

It is important that the neck circumference is measured precisely so that the pull-stop collar fits perfectly and is comfortable to wear. A well-fitted pull-stop collar makes it possible to lead the dog safely without putting unnecessary strain on the dog's neck. This makes every walk more relaxed and safer for both dog and owner. Make sure that the collar is made of high-quality materials and fits comfortably around your dog's neck - this way you combine safety, comfort and functionality in one product.

Our Classic dog collars

We offer you a range of Classic variants so that you are guaranteed to find the right one for you and your four-legged friend. The absolute classic is our CLASSIC leather dog collar made from genuine elk leather with a buckle. The classic buckle collar also offers practical adjustment options so that it can be individually adapted to your dog's neck circumference to a certain extent. The CLASSIC Light dog collar is also suitable for almost all types of dog thanks to its comfortable cut and easy pull.

Long-haired furry friends will love the CLASSIC round pull dog collar made from soft elk leather. It clings particularly gently to the neck and coat without leaving pressure marks and protects the sensitive ruff. Thanks to its round shape, it visually "disappears" into the coat and prevents hair breakage or unsightly tangles in the neck area. This keeps your dog's coat intact and the collar is extremely comfortable to wear.

OUTDOOR round pull dog collar

Leather is very comfortable to wear, but it tends to become hard when wet. Compared to leather, which often becomes hard when wet, our OUTDOOR round pull collar remains pleasantly soft and flexible even in rain and moisture thanks to the special PES fiber. It is the perfect companion for all outdoor adventures with your dog - robust, weatherproof and particularly comfortable. Thanks to its round shape, it lies gently on the neck and is gentle on the coat, preventing hair breakage or matting, even with long-haired dogs. High-quality leather fittings and the lightweight, flexible material make it a barely noticeable collar that offers your dog maximum freedom of movement.

Reasons that speak in favor of a dog harness

The point of traction is on the chest and not, as with a collar, in the throat and neck area. An incorrectly fitted collar on the sensitive neck can cause serious damage to the cervical spine or larynx. For example, if your dog runs off on the drag line and reaches the end, the collar will pull directly on the neck. The pull cannot be distributed over the chest and upper body, i.e. a much larger area, which significantly reduces the jerk.

But it's all about the right size and fit so that your pet can move freely in the harness at all times. A harness that is too tight and constricting feels to the dog like an ill-fitting rucksack with constricting straps feels to us.

A dog harness is suitable in these situations

In contrast to a collar, a harness consists of more connecting pieces that wrap around the neck and chest.

  • Your dog is not yet walking calmly or is pulling on the lead.
  • You work with a drag line.
  • You go jogging with your dog or let him run alongside you while cycling.
  • You can intervene quickly in the event of danger.

Pleasant and robust material

The dog harness should be easy to clean and tear-resistant. This is why most models are made of webbing or nylon. The material is robust and relatively weatherproof. You can also buy the models in different colors and designs.

The width of the strap is important. This allows the pull to be better distributed over the dog's body. Straps that are too narrow will cut uncomfortably when pulled.

We pay attention to the high quality of our materials so that your dog feels comfortable with the dog harness. Our practical everyday harness is available in the V2 COMFORT WALK PRO dog harness for all sizes and the COMFORT WALK GO dog harness especially for smaller breeds.

Why a well-fitting dog harness is so important

A dog harness must be neither too tight nor too loose. The size depends on the dog. We have variants for small and large dogs.

The models are flexibly adjustable, but for the ideal fit you roughly need the size that comes closest to your dog. You must take the following criteria into account:

  • Chest circumference,
  • Neck circumference and
  • Your dog's weight.

Make sure you let your dog walk without a harness at home so that he can relax completely and lie comfortably in his dog bed or on his dog mat.

Chest circumference of the dog

To determine the chest circumference, measure just behind the front legs at the widest part of the chest. The measuring tape may be tight, but should not constrict your dog.

You always need the chest circumference for a dog harness.

Weight of the dog

It's easy to find out how heavy your dog is. Simply ask your vet to weigh your dog during a check-up. Weighing is often part of the annual check-up. With a small dog, you can also try using the scales at home.

Dog collars & harnesses in training and education

Dog collars and harnesses are indispensable aids in training and educating your dog. They help you to gently get your dog used to the lead and minimize pulling. A suitable collar or harness ensures that your dog feels comfortable during training and can concentrate on the exercises. There is a large selection of dog collars: whether classic leather collars, robust rope collars or easy-care dog collars made of biothane - there is a suitable solution for every dog and every training requirement.

A soft, lightweight and adjustable puppy collar is particularly important for puppies so that they get used to wearing a collar at an early age and gain positive experiences. For adult dogs, it is also worth investing in a high-quality collar or harness that fits perfectly and supports the dog during training. The right choice and use of dog collars and harnesses will make training more effective, reduce pulling on the lead and make training together even more enjoyable. This lays the foundation for a harmonious relationship between you and your dog.
